The mission of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics is to increase access to healthcare for all and improve the health and well being of our clients. Haight Ashbury Free Clinics provides high quality, demystified and comprehensive health care that is culturally sensitive, non-judgmental and accessible to all in need.
Description:
Serving a diverse population that is predominantly uninsured and homeless, 80% of our clients have incomes below the Federal Poverty Level and are between 20 and 44 years of age. We serve over 17,000 individuals and deliver more than 162,000 client visits per year, making Haight Ashbury Free Clinics one of San Francisco’s largest and leading human service agencies. The Clinics is a $13 million safety-net provider of healthcare services and consistently receives commendations for quality of care and culturally competent services.
History:
Haight Ashbury Free Clinics began during the ‘Summer of Love’ in 1967. Tens of thousands of youths migrated to San Francisco attracted to the music of the San Francisco Sound, free love, and plentiful drugs. San Francisco’s medical service providers had neither the skills nor the means to deal with or service this large population influx. From that historic beginning, today The Clinics comprises facilities from The Haight to Treasure Island and has evolved into five major programs staffed with 175 dedicated employees and 500 committed volunteers.
