For more than 40 years, American Cancer Society Discovery Shops have helped support the fight against cancer by raising money through the sale of high quality, gently used, donated merchandise. These special items include furniture, artwork, antiques, collectibles, and other household items.
Description:
Owned and operated by the American Cancer Society, there are 40 Discovery Shops in California, staffed primarily by 2,000 dedicated volunteers. These talented individuals - many of whom have been personally touched by cancer - passionately contribute their time, energy and skills to make our Discovery Shop a success. Our local Mill Valley shop is open 7 days a week to serve the public and is conveniently located in a popular shopping center just west of Highway 101.
History:
Nearly 40 years ago an American Cancer Society Volunteer by the name of Denise Noel had an interesting fundraising idea. She envisioned a thrift store that sold only the best of gently used clothing, furniture and collectibles. Since the concept of “high quality” was not customarily associated with “thrift”, she faced many challenges. But sheer determination, hard work and extreme foresight resulted in the opening of the first California Division American Cancer society “thrift store” in the San Fernando Valley in 1965.
Currently there are 40 Discovery Shops in California, from Eureka to San Diego. The volunteer base of each store ranges from 45 to 125 people. Our Mill Valley shop has won numerous awards for sales volume.
