Oakland Symphony Chorus
The mission of the Oakland Symphony Chorus is to serve the Oakland/East Bay community with professional-quality choral performances and music education:
- We present independent and collaborative performances of a wide range of choral music to an expanding and diverse audience.
- We educate our community in the art of singing and in the appreciation of choral music.
- We forge connections through choral music among the culturally diverse members of our community.
- We serve our community through leadership in the arts.
Description:
"...the ensemble was firing on all cylinders, mustering a clear, robust and wondrously blended sound" wrote Joshua Kosman in the San Francisco Chronicle of our May 16, 2003, performance of Elijah. For 45 years the 120-member Oakland Symphony Chorus has been recognized as one of the East Bay's finest choirs and a premier resource for continuing education in the choral arts. In addition to presenting our own concerts and workshops, the OSC collaborates with many fine performing arts groups including the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Festival Opera, Oakland Ballet, Oakland Civic Orchestra, Oakland Youth Orchestra, and the Young People's Symphony Orchestra. OSC has received consistently impressive concert reviews and developed a range of educational opportunities for all segments of the community. They include: Summer Sing-Ins: Opportunities to sing through major choral works with some of the region's finest conductors, on Tuesday evenings in July and August. Discovery Day: Sing/study workshop on a major work led by an engaging conductor-scholar. Sight Singing: Classes for choral devotees on the fundamentals of sight singing.
History:
The chorus has been a fixture of the East Bay arts community for 5 decades. In addition to our regular concerts with the Oakland East Bay Symphony, the Oakland Civic Orchestra and two fine youth orchestras, we also reach out to the community by offering workshops on musical styles, scholarly examinations of the works we perform, and volunteer activities such as our annual caroling programs.
