The Friends Of The San Francisco Independent Living Skills Program

The mission of the Friends of the San Francisco Independent Living Skills Program (Friends of SFILSP) is to empower youth emancipating from foster care in San Francisco to succeed in living independently.

Description:
Founded in 2005 as a 501(c)3 non-profit and entirely volunteer run, Friends of SFILSP provides supplemental financial and/or material support to current and former foster youth served by the San Francisco Independent Living Skills Program, a program of the San Francisco Human Services Agency which prepares foster youth for independent living. Almost all our funding goes directly to support youth.

We provide the following supports:

  1. Scholarships and grants, based on need, to meet college or vocational training costs such as tuition, dorm fees, books, and computers and grants for safe, stable housing and other basic living needs.
  2. Support for activities such as college tours and educational field trips and for other financial or material aid to empower current and former foster youth.
  3. Volunteer assistance to the San Francisco Independent Living Skills Program (ILSP), such as chaperoning field trips and speaking at career day events.
  4. Advice and general support regarding program development to the ILSP Program.
  5. Community education through public speaking and other media events about the needs of foster youth and former foster youth.

  6. History:
Friends of SFILSP was founded in 2005 by a group of volunteers who had been part of an ongoing advisory board to the San Francisco Independent Living Skills Program, a program of the San Francisco Human Services Agency. It was founded in response to a need to fill gaps in funding and support for emancipating foster youth, especially those seeking higher education.
