Gallinas Watershed Council
The Gallinas Watershed Council's mission is to connect the people who live and work in Las Gallinas Valley with their watershed, to help each other take responsibility for our impact on the watershed through protection, restoration and education, and to advance conservation action in our watershed environment.
Description:
We are a group of volunteers who live within in Gallinas Creek Watershed. The creek flows through Terra Linda and Santa Venetia. We are trying to educate people that the ditch up the middle of Freitas Parkway is actually Gallinas Creek (and used to have a salmon run). One of our main goals is to reduce the amount of debris - mostly plastic - that flows down the creek, from Northgate Mall, Hwy 101, and storm drains, into the Gallinas Creek marsh and the still natural portions of the creek. There are huge amounts of this trash that wash down after each winter rain storm. We are starting to work with the City of San Rafael to see if they will implement some type of trash capture devices - like a floating boom - to prevent the trash from reaching the lower creek.
History:
We started just last Fall, we meet in Santa Venetia (members homes), and have a core working group of six people.
