EarthTeam Environmental Network
EarthTeam's mission is to create a new generation of environmental leaders by introducing into the classroom and the community environmental experiences that inspire dedication to a healthy environment.
Description:
EarthTeam provides middle and high school students and teachers in predominantly low-income communities with environmental science activities in the classroom and in the field. Through EarthTeam's projects, students learn about environmental restoration, asthma and air quality, global warming, waste reduction, and environmental multimedia skills. EarthTeam's highly qualified educators conduct a variety of in-class and after school programs that provide leadership opportunities for teens. The organization provides opportunities for teachers to showcase their students' work in the web-based Green Newsletter and on Green Screen TV, which airs online and on 11 Bay Area stations. EarthTeam is endorsed by the Superintendents of Schools of both Alameda and Contra Costa Counties and in 2008 the esteemed National Forum on Children and Nature endorsed our Eco-Stewards restoration program combined with our Green Screen Program as one of 30 projects chosen from a field of 500 nationwide. The program was judged as creatively connecting low-income youth with nature by tapping the tools of education, technology, and local environments and serves as a model for other regions.
History:
EarthTeam, a nonprofit organization based in the East Bay, was launched in January 2000 by a coalition of educational, environmental, and governmental representatives who saw a need to provide curriculum-connected, community-based environmental programs for overwhelmed teachers who lacked the time and resources to create such programs. Since its inception, EarthTeam?s mission has been to inspire teens to become environmental stewards of their local communities and beyond by introducing active and engaging environmental experiences into the classroom and the community. EarthTeam is committed to serving teachers by being on-call for teacher requests, and by partnering with outstanding community organizations to deliver quality programs that meet teachers' curricular needs.
