The Salvation Army, founded in 1865, is an international religious and social service movement, organized and operated on a quasi-military pattern. The mission is expressed through its religious meetings and activities as well as through its vast network of programs and services which meet human needs and advocate for the disadvantaged.

Description:
In Oakland The Salvation Army operates a family shelter, a day care center, a food pantry, utility payment assistance, a recovery center, thrift stores, after-school programs, youth troop activities, Day Camp and Summer Residental Camping, tutoring classes, music instruction, a senior citizen drop-in center and Sunday worship services and Bible Studies within several Salvationist congregations in the city. Volunteers are welcome to be involved on our Advisory Board, to help in our offices and to assist in our food pantry and seasonal "Toy and Joy" program.

History:
The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 in London, by the Rev. "General" William Booth, among the working classes. Due to the mobility of its military system, it advanced to other countries. It is now actively ministering in 119 nations around the world. In 1883 The Salvation Army arrived in Oakland. At first a church was used, then a new facility was built on 9th Street near Clay Street. An orphanage and family shelter program developed at Beulah House, and this later became the Booth Memorial Home and Hospital for unwed mothers. Today this is the site for the Garden Street Shelter, the Booth Day Care Center and the Garden Center Corps ( Congregation ). Our food pantry and family service office is located at 379 12th street, convenient to public transportation routes. Our Chinese congregation and an English language group meet in the same building. A men's recovery program operates at 601 Webster Street, where 130 men engage in a work therapy program towards sober living. This project is supported by the income from the Salvation Army thrift stores throughout the East Bay.
In 2008 the Alameda County Coordinating office moved into the 12th Street location to help with public relations and fund-raising for the East Bay operations.
