Bay Area Funeral Society
The Bay Area Funeral Society is a non-profit organization that protects the consumer's right to choose a meaningful, dignified, and affordable funeral. We do this by educating people about about a wide range of burial and cremation options, including traditional, economical, green, and/or home funerals. We also contract with local independent mortuaries so that our members receive death goods and services at reduced prices.
Description:
The Bay Area Funeral Society is a non-profit consumer education and advocacy group that is supported by the national Funeral Consumer s Alliance (www.funerals.org). We are run solely by volunteers, and have no attachment to the funeral industry or to any religious group.
History:
The Bay Area Funeral Society grew out of the Berkeley Co-op movement and has been in operation since 1955. In the past, our membership roster included the famous author, Jessica Mitford, whose best-selling book, The American Way of Death, exposed the excesses and high-pressure sales tactics of the funeral industry. The Bay Area Funeral Society continues her work.
