Gardens at Heather Farm
The Gardens are a regional environmental resource of natural beauty offering demonstration gardens and educational programs for adults and children that nurture an appreciation , understanding and enjoyment of California ecology and horticulture.
Description:
The Gardens at Heather Farm embrace a six-acre hillside adjoining Heather Farm Park. Twenty-three demonstration gardens serve as a living classroom for children and adult programs, while showcasing landscape styles and plants adapted to our area's Mediterranean climate. The Gardens also demonstrate healthy garden practices which emphasize water conservation and pesticide alternatives. The Natural Science Classroom series offers 12,000 children each year hands-on programs, using the gardens as a living classroom. Adult programs are also offered, as well as workshops and on-site demonstrations.
History:
Founded in 1968, the six-acre site has been leased from the City of Walnut Creek since 1977 and has been developed and maintained by volunteers and a small part-time staff. The Gardens at Heather Farm is supported through private donations, facility rentals, program fees and benefit events. To date, the organization has raised and invested more than $2M in the development of twenty-three demonstration gardens.
