Hunters Point Community Youth Park Foundation
Our mission is to enrich the economic, academic and social lives of the lives of low-income families in the Bayview Hunters Point community by providing them with a wide range of free recreational, educational and cultural programs and services.
Description:
Program Design
Healthy Kids. Goal is to address childhood obesity by providing and introducing the children to healthy eating habits and becoming more active.
Provide a healthy breakfast before school. Provide a healthy dinner after they leave Malcolm X Academy’s after school program (during the 1st year. The 2nd & 3rd year we would implement our own after school programs).
Provide a fitness program which would include several sports teams a Hip-hop dance class, capoeira class and cooking class. Create activities around knowledge of the food pyramid and nutrition facts label, the importance of eating 5 fresh fruits and vegetables a day, eating more whole grains and wheat, less fats & sweets, no trans fats,
Capoeira is a wonderfully fun art that is a challenging, and meaningful way to get healthier, to become more physically and mentally alert, emotionally balanced, musically and socially engaged. Capoeira can be a means for great personal transformation and expression, as well as a unifying force that builds community. The program will run for six weeks and upon its completion, there will be a performance held in the end February, Black History month, for the parents and community members.
Saturday Program. Goal is to provide our children with positive activities during this idle time to reduce the risk of them be involved in negative activities. Activities include fieldtrips, game room activities, sports, movies, free play and arts & crafts. We will also provide a healthy breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack. During the 2nd and 3rd year we would like to offer a healthy dinner as well.
Skool’s out Program. During week days when schools are closed due to holidays, spring break, winter break and in service days we will provide the following fieldtrips, game room activities, sports, movies, free play and arts & crafts.
Special Events. The Youth Park holds three parties a year, at Easter, Halloween and Christmas. These are very important events, eagerly anticipated by the children, many of whose families lack the resources for even the simplest celebration. We would like to expand this program to include MLK Day of service, Thanksgiving dinner or turkey give a way, Caser Chavez celebration, Pacific Islander celebration (let’s talk more about these two), Kwanza, Summer party and a black history month celebration.
Summer Program. The summer program will begin with a kick off celebration Block party. During the summer the children will receive a healthy breakfast then they will engage in positive interactions with other youth from their school and immediate community on fieldtrips outside of the city. We will also provide a healthy breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack.
History:
The last three years have presented our agency with significant challenges. During this time, we’ve suffered two great losses: Julia ‘Aunt Bea’ Middleton, Youth Park Executive Director, passed away in 2003. Aunt Bea dedicated over 25 years to serving the youth and families of HPCYP. Richard ‘Dick’ Bailin, HPCYP founder and Board President, passed away in 2006. Dick Bailin founded HPCYP in 1965 in response to the Watts Riots, and played an active role in the agency until his death. Both Aunt Bea and Dick Bailin had a profound impact on HPCYP and they will be greatly missed.
In the summer of 2006, the organization held focus group meetings with the children and parents of our community. As a result of these meetings, we have restructured our Board of Directors and are actively recruiting new members.
