Under One Roof
The mission of Under One Roof is to generate unrestricted funds for 26 AIDS Service Organizations ("ASO's")that provide HIV/AIDS education and support services.
Description:
Under One Roof is a retail gift store that raises and distributes unrestricted funding for the fight against AIDS. 100% of the profit from every purchase is distributed to participating ASO's.
History:
Wanting to fight the disease that was ravishing their community, a group of friends joined together in 1990 to create a small retail shop, the proceeds from which they would give to local ASO's. They occupied a little corner of the Names Project's Market Street storefront for the holiday season. Customers were thrilled--they were able to give support to the fight against AIDS by giving gifts to friends and loved ones. And so began an enduring tradition: "giving the gift that gives twice." Two years later, UOR opened its first year round store. It was a truly collaborative effort: ASO's came together to sell merchandise , volunteers ran and staffed the store, corporate partners provided funding, vendors donated goods to be sold, and customers shopped their little hearts out. All together, all under one roof. Today, we are still working to fight the fight. In 19 years, we've sold over $17MM in merchandise and distributed more than $4 million to local ASO's.

Overall Experience

Christmas in July. . .
 |
. . .Is what I saw when I wandered into the wondrous Castro Street version of Santa's workshop, a/k/a Under One Roof, on Pride weekend. My name is Ken, and I was swept away by the enchanting spell cast by the volunteers inside; I immediately signed-up as a volunteer elf myself. It just seemed so. . .rightno more ponderous excuses for the 'I always wanted to volunteer but where?' lame-game. And when I discovered the full thrust of UOR's outreach, as delineated by Operations Manager Michael Bongiorni, I really knew I was in the right place:
UOR is a non-profit organization that raises funds for more than 40 AIDS service organizations in the Bay Area. And over the past thirteen years, UOR has raised nearly
ten million dollars for these worthy charities.
Furthermore:
Under One Roof is a unique gift shop in the heart of the Castro,
staffed almost entirely by volunteers.
100% of all sales profits benefit men, women and children
affected by AIDS/HIV. Volunteers work in the
store for 3 to 4 hours per shift:
Greeting and assisting customers
Stocking the store
Having fun and meeting new friends
Making a difference
Your good work will help raise unrestricted funding for nearly 50
different AIDS Service Organizations, all at the same time.
To Volunteer: please stop by the store or call (415) 503-2300
