Marin Abused Women's Services
Through leadership at local, national, and international levels, Marin Abused Women's Services advances the thinking and practices of the battered women’s justice movement by: 1) providing programs and services in Marin County for the empowerment of women and the immediate and long-term safety of women and children; 2) engaging diverse communities in domestic violence prevention; 3) developing and providing transformative education for perpetrators of violence; and 4) collaborating with the greater community to create innovative and dynamic solutions to end the violence, abuse, oppression, and intimidation of women.
Description:
MAWS' services include a 24 hour Hotline and Emergency Shelter for battered women and their children; Transitional Housing; Community Groups for women at risk; Men's program with hotline and re-education for abusive men; and, grass-roots, prevention and education oriented Transforming Communities.
History:
Marin Abused Women's Services (MAWS) was founded in 1977 in response to the escalating levels of domestic violence in Marin County. Members of the Marin Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) started the organization at the onset of the battered women's movement. Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and staff and more than 30 years of hard work, MAWS has developed a comprehensive range of support services and prevention programs.
